When may a deponent review the transcript and sign changes?

If the deponent or a party requested review before the deposition was completed, the deponent must be allowed thirty days after the officer notifies availability of the transcript or recording. The deponent may review it and sign a statement listing changes and reasons. This calculator covers the ordinary thirty-day review period, without deciding whether particular changes are permissible.

Which event starts this procedure?

Verify that the deponent or a party requested review before the deposition was completed.

Preserve the officer’s actual notification that the transcript or recording is available.

Read any actual order affecting the review period. Do not substitute deposition completion or transcript preparation for notification.

FRCP 30(e)(1)

How is the ordinary period counted?

  1. Identify the actual actor, pleading and required act.
  2. Establish the specified event and applicable order.
  3. Exclude the verified event day and count the scoped calendar-day period.
  4. Check final-day conditions and preserve service and filing evidence separately.

Exclude the independently established event day and count the scoped period under Rule 6(a). This event does not itself invoke Rule 6(d). Check the actual procedure and any different applicable order or granted extension.

Rule 6(a) excludes the operative event and counts intermediate calendar days. A final Saturday, Sunday or legal holiday moves forward. Rule 6(a)(6) includes federal and President or Congress declared holidays, plus state-declared holidays for forward periods in the district. Qualifying clerk inaccessibility matters separately for filing.

FRCP 6(a)(1)

Which conditions change the assessment?

Request before completion
The right described in Rule 30(e)(1) arises on a request by the deponent or a party before the deposition is completed.
Signed changes and reasons
Changes in form or substance require a signed statement listing the changes and the reasons. This calculator does not decide admissibility or contested changes.
Certificate and actual order
Rule 30(e)(2) requires the officer to note the requested review and attach changes made during the thirty-day period. Verify any actual different court order or granted extension separately.
FRCP 30(e)(1)
  • This page does not establish effective service, merits, compliance or an actual court grant.
  • Service and filing are different acts. Verify both when required.

What should I verify before acting?
