What starts this Illinois civil period?
Establish the actual arbitration hearing date and any actual rescheduling.
Identify each proposed expert and assemble the required statement and incorporated information.
Establish effective written notice to every other party with the complete statement.
Illinois Supreme Court Rule 90(d)How is this Illinois civil period counted?
- Establish the actual arbitration hearing date and any actual rescheduling.
- Count thirty calendar days backward from the independently established arbitration hearing date. This is minimum advance notice to every other party. Establish effective delivery by that boundary. The preset preserves its nominal date and requires separate closed-day review; it does not move the boundary forward to shorten notice.
- Check statutory holidays and the proper court’s actual calendar.
- Give every other party timely written notice accompanied by the expert statement. Include identity, qualifications, subject matter, the basis of conclusions, opinion and Rule 222(d)(6) information. Preserve the complete package and delivery proof. Do not treat a witness name alone as the required statement.
A minimum notice period counted backward needs the actual hearing calendar and timely effective notice. Section 1.11 does not supply this preset with an automatic backward landing-day adjustment. Preserve the nominal boundary and review a weekend, statutory holiday, special order or local closure separately. Do not move a minimum notice date forward and shorten the required notice.

Fictitious example
Fictitious facts. The hearing date is established and complete expert notice must be effectively given to every other party by the minimum boundary. The established event is August 5, 2027. No additional local closure or different court direction is assumed.
| Step | What is counted | Date |
|---|---|---|
| Established event | Established arbitration hearing date | August 5, 2027 |
| Applicable period | Not less than 30 calendar days of advance expert notice | July 6, 2027 |
Fictitious facts. Establish effective notice to every other party by the minimum notice boundary. This preset preserves the nominal date and does not automatically adjust a closed landing day. Review service, local closures and actual orders separately.
Try these dates in the calculatorWhich qualifications and court directions matter?
- Both written opinion and testimony are covered
- Rule 90(d) applies when a party proposes a written expert opinion or any expert testimony. Its notice goes to every other party and must include the listed expert statement.
- The incorporated information must be complete
- Rule 222(d)(6) calls for expert identity and address plus Rule 213(f) information. Rule 213(f) distinguishes lay, independent expert and controlled expert disclosure. Determine the actual witness category and required detail.
- Controlled experts require detailed disclosure
- Rule 213(f)(3) requires the subject, conclusions and opinions with bases, qualifications and reports. Independent expert disclosure under paragraph (f)(2) follows its stated reasonable-notice standard.
- Effective service determines the event
- Use Rule 11’s applicable service method and file Rule 12 proof. Rule 12(c) makes electronic or personal delivery service effective on its stated day, mail service complete four days after mailing, and third-party carrier service complete on the third court day after delivery to the carrier. Establish effective service before using a service-triggered calculator. A rule requiring personal or email service cannot be replaced with ordinary mail.
- The calculator does not decide the applicable civil procedure, disputed facts, sufficiency of a filing or whether the court grants relief.
- Check the governing edition and actual orders. A current rule does not establish every historical case’s timetable.
